Mucosal changes around dental metal fillings such as oral lichen may be due to an allergic reaction to the metal content. Replacement of fillings in metal-sensitive patient leads to disappearance of the symptoms. Allergic reactions to metals used in dental prosthesis and braces can be measured in MELISA®.

Symptoms may not always be local but can be systemic and include inflammation in different body parts. Patients with known clinical metal sensitivity such as adverse reactions to gold and nickel containing earrings should consider non-metallic restorative materials.

MELISA® can provide information if the patients is reacting to any dental materials in his or her mouth. In some cases amalgam is not the problem, but instead it’s the gold crowns. Together with a special metal-biopsy test, the dentist can pinpoint the exact filling that contains the metal or metals that the patient is reacting to. This may save a lot of time and money if the patients have many different types of fillings.

MELISA® can also be used as a preventive screening before the insertion of for example gold crowns or titanium implants. If an allergy is diagnosed the patient might consider a biocompatible materials such as ceramics or zirconium.

In some countries, insurance might pay for replacement of dental materials that the patient is allergic to.
